Bit of a thorny issue, this one. It seems to vary wildly between different cameras/photographers. It may be true that some E-10s have problems, but hopefully that is a Quality matter that will fade within the production lifecycle. That said, there are one or two points to be made about this.

To those coming from traditional photographic backgrounds - the CCD is tiny in comparison to a 35mm film frame. Hence, any 'shake' on the part of the photographer will be hugely magnified. To those coming from a digital P&S background - the E-10 is much bulkier and heavier than the Point and Shoot digicams, and is not so easy to cup in the hands. Also, if used in Program mode the E-10 tends toward a wider aperture - thus a smaller depth of field ie the zone of acceptable focus is much narrower. Therefore I heavily advise the use of a tripod or beanbag support when possible.

The E-10 was not designed as a 'shoot from the hip'camera.

The positioning of the IR (infra-red) focusing emitter window is not great - it can be blocked by fingers VERY easily. Watch for it, be conscious of it to start with - eventually it will become second nature to keep the window clear of chubby obstructions!

Parallax focusing problems can occur due to the offset angle from the lens of the IR emitter. Basically, if you are close to a subject that is centered in the AF focus bracket in the viewfinder, the IR emitter may not be focusing at the same point. Be aware that this could be happening, and make allowances for it.

Some E-10 users have found that, in normal lighting situations, limiting the camera to using the CCD only to focus can improve performance. This is done by effectively telling the E-10 to turn off the IR emitter. To do this, access the set-up menu

and change the setup to this:

Now return to your preferred shooting mode (M,S,A or P) and press and hold the Macro button

whilst turning the command wheel

until the non-flashing teleconverter symbol is shown on the LCD.

Hold pointer over buttons for destination - click to go there!
